Violent Weekend: 15 Road Deaths, Tornado Kills Three
Speeding, alcohol and pedestrian carelessness made this weekend a bloody one with 15 deaths on the country's roads, the majority of the deaths occurring in the province of Limón.

For some reason, drivers are not getting the message to slowdown, especially when it is raining and despite police efforts, a great number still continue to drive after drinking, making the combination of alcohol, speeding and slippery roads a fatal one.

In the Caribbean coast alone, authorities reported the death of 7 men and a child resulting from being run over and collision between vehicles.

For Nicaraguan, Levis Martínez Morán, death came in the area of Rio Blanco de Guápiles when he was hitchhiking. The driver of the tractor trailer that stopped for the man was drunk and soon lost control of his vehicle crashing into an empty lot off the side of the road.

In a separate incident, yesterday, three members of a family died on ruta 32 (the main road between San José and Limón) when their vehicle was hit by a tree that had been flung by a tornado. The natural phenomenon  pulled a huge tree from its roots and landed on top of the Isuzu Trooper driven by Juan Carlos Campos Vargas. His father was riding in the back seat with him, while his seven year old son was thrown from the vehicle, at the time of the freak accident.

A private ambulance that happened to be on the route at the time rushed the young boy to the Hospital Tony Facio in Limón, where he died shortly after arrival. In the vehicle, four other family members were hurt.

The tornado was reported in the area of Espavel de Matina (a short distance from Limón centre) causing damage to several homes in the area, damage roofs and pulling trees from their roots, according to eye witness, Heinde García, a resident of the area.
