Airport Caper Stymies Guatemala
Investigations about the so called "robbery of the century" in the Guatemalan La Aurora international airport have thrown more doubts than facts about the perpetrators and where the largest stash of the loot is.

The authorities versions on the gang structure was broken up when the supposed brain of the robbery appeared before a judge, confessed, and requested revocation of his release on bail to protect his life.

German Estuardo Santos, a Civil Aeronautics worker, had been captured due to unfulfilment of his duties on the day of the robbery, but was set free because he was not able to pay the bail imposed by the court.

Later, he was accused by the Attorney General s Office of being the organizer of a 17-people group that robbed between eight and nine million dollars in an airport maximum security section in September.

Santos denied the accusations and asked to be arrested again, because he feared being attacked, but the judge said not to have an arrest warrant against him, and returned him to his home.

Another man allegedly involved, according to the Attorney General s Office, Hugo Federico Jordan Cabrera was assassinated a week ago, before his relation to the crime was known, and his wife Marta Consuelo Cuellar is still missing.

Both were intercepted in a street of Guatemala, together with their two-year-old son, who appeared alive, hours later in a park of eastern Jalapa.

A new dark point of the process is the supposed capture in a capital supermarket of a woman and her son, when they were carrying a suitcase with $25,000 from the airport robbery.

Those people were not taken to court, because they supposedly opted for the witness-protection program, but their names were leaked to the national press.

The raids in search of clues or part of the money will continue on Friday in sectors of the capital and neighboring provinces, although the citizens feel the case has thrown more doubts than certainties so far.
