Panama Probes Lethal Syndrome
A probe into a syndrome that has
killed 18 people in Panama is
now focusing on medication since
toxic traces in kidney and
nervous tissue have ruled out
bacteria or viruses.
Panama General Health Director
Cirilo Lawson said they are
studying the victims medication
as common source.
Health Minister Camilo Alleyne
said 28 people reported the
symptoms, yet the figure may
rise.
The aggressive disease starts
with diarrhea and vomiting and
leads to kidney and respiratory
failure.
Rosario Turner, director of
medical services of the social
security department said public
hospitals are isolating patients
with symptoms.
The Gorgas Institute has already
discarded dengue, influenza A
and B, West Nile virus, equine
encephalitis or enterovirus.
Local Health authorities have
found support from the
Pan-American Health Organization
and the US Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention.
