Guatemalan organizations
criticized the cuts in social
expenses for health, housing and
education in the next annual
budget, which is now in the
hands of the Congress of the
Republic for approval.
Orlando Blanco from the Human
Rights International Research
Center (HRIRC) emphasized the
amount of money for these items
will diminish in 2007 in respect
to the current year.
The ministry of Education and
Public Health will have less to
supply the demands of the
population, asserted Blanco
analyzing the nation Budget
Project of Income and
Expenditures
To this reduction is added the
contraction in housing
allowance, despite the increment
of housing deficit caused by
tropical storm Stan, noted the
HRIRC specialist.
Guatemala is the regional
country with smallest tax
collection rate and is still
pending a reform predicted in
the Peace Agreements signed 10
years ago.
The Congress of Guatemala will
study the 2007 Budget Project in
which a raise in security
expenditure is foreseen after
being demanded by the Ministries
of defense and Interior.
