Violence Prevails in El Salvador
Citizen insecurity is one of the
main concerns of Salvadorans,
declared a survey today by the
University Institute of Public
Opinion of the Central American
Catholic University, with 76
percent of the population
pessimistic about rising crime.
Figures of the Attorney General
of the Republic and other
national indicators say there
were about 3,800 murders last
year, and between January and
September of this year at least
2,931 persons were killed. Last
month alone, 317 homicides were
registered, 80 percent of which
were with guns.
Civilian, political and
religious organizations
constantly denounce government
inadequacy to combat this
blight, and the Farabundo Marti
Front for National Liberation (FMLN),
the main opposition party,
recently proposed a program to
reduce violence.
The report assures that
preventive measures of a social
order instead of repression
would reduce the high criminal
rate.
The FMLN proposed actions of
weapons control and programs for
young people to prevent drug
use, promote jobs for in
marginal areas, boost education
and adopt effective measures to
prevent family violence.
