Child Murders High in Guatemala
Almost 400 children and adolescents were killed so far this year in Guatemala, according to a UNICEF report "Violence against Childhood and Adolescence in Guatemala" published here Wednesday.

The document uses statistics from the Human Rights Attorney s Office, National Civilian Police, Children Prosecutor s Office and the Supreme Court to show that of the 395 victims reported, 90.7 percent died violently, the majority from firearms and the rest by knives and other weapons.

The document states that 330 were male and 65 female, the latter also victims of sexual attacks.

According to human rights organizations, at least one child dies each day in this country, from youth gang violence, organized crime, drug traffic, or the practice of "social cleansing."

There are also those killed in an attempt to travel to the United States and Mexico.

The most recent case of crime against a minor was reported Wednesday when authorities found the body of an approximately 11-year-old child wrapped up in a bag in this capital.
