Nicaragua Battles for Parliament
Three of the four Nicaraguan
political forces that achieved
parliamentarian seats in the
elections are fighting hard to
lead the National Assembly that
will be set from January 9.
The Sandinista National
Liberation Front (FSLN), the
Constitutionalist Liberal Party
(PLC) and the Constitutionalist
Liberal Alliance (ALC) lust
after the presidency of the
legislative body.
The Sandinistas demand the
leadership of the unicameral
Parliament by virtue of the
results of November 5 elections
in which they became the first
political force of the country,
holding 38 government councils
besides winning the presidency
of the nation.
"We represent the country s
first political force and in
previous legislative periods
usually the deputies that won
the elections have lead the
National Assembly s presidency,"
assured to the press the
Sandinista legislator Jose
Figueroa.
However, the PLC with 25 seats
won t give up the idea of
leading future debates in the
parliamentarian chamber, nor
will the ALN, which won 23
seats.
