Colombia Political Scandal

The disclosure of a political
deal signed by 40 congress
people and heads of the United
Autodefenses of Colombia (AUC)
is on Monday the new chapter in
what is called the para-politics
scandal, referring to alleged
links between paramilitary
groups and politicians in this
nation.
On Nov 9, the Supreme Court of
Justice issued arrest warrants
with no parole against
legislators Alvaro Garcia, Jairo
Merlano and Eric Morris, among
others, for their ostensible
links with AUC.
But in this new chapter,
pro-government Senator Miguel de
la Espriella affirmed that in
2001 forty lawmakers flew to
Santa Fe de Ralito to clinch a
political pact supporting a
public opinion movement to boost
AUC proposals at government
talks.
After noting that the government
of President Alvaro Uribe was
unaware of that agreement, De la
Espriella assured that among
signatories appear political
leaders of Cordova state,
journalists as well as
neoliberal and conservative
politicians that are members of
the current leadership.
The revelation may be related to
the decision of the Supreme
Court of Justice to request the
Senate to determine if De la
Espriella is still a member of
that legislative body.
Hence, the senator may be
summoned by the judicial entity
to give evidence on the
notorious scandal.
