Bananas: Costa Rica Will Not
Support Ecuador With WTO
The Costa Rican vice minister of
foreign affairs, Amparo Pacheco
is convinced that a Latin
American request for a WTO
arbitration panel in the dispute
around the European banana
import regime will endanger the
cooperative agreement for
Central America with the
European Union.
Although this threat has never
been uttered by the European
Union officially, it has been
made officiously a long time
ago, according to Pacheco.
Although Costa Rica does not
agree with the present import
regime, it is not willing to
request a WTO arbitration panel.
Costa Rica will rather attempt
to reach a reduction of the
tariff through negotiation with
mediation of the Norwegian
minister Store. This effectively
means that Costa Rica will not
support Ecuador in it’s WTO
arbitration request.
