Risk of Vote Buying in Mexico
The Electoral Federal Institute
(IFE) accepted the existence on
Wednesday of at least 42 Mexican
municipalities which conditions
seem favorable for the buying or
coercion of votes in the
presidential elections on
Sunday.
These localities combine a high
percentage of participation of
electors and people that have
not finished primary school, in
both cases higher than 60
percent, a report of Civic
Education and Electoral Training
Commission reported.
The document presented on
Thursday night in an
extraordinary session of the
General Council points out that
in those 42 municipalities there
have been programs implemented
with the objective to prevent
those kind of practices.
From the first minute of
Thursday June 29 meetings and
public campaigning or propaganda
will be prohibited, with only
IFE institutional campaigns
authorized.
