Serious AIDS Concern in
Guatemala
Between 60,000 and 80,000 people
could be infected by HIV in
Guatemala, declared Victor Hugo
Lopez, coordinator of the “More
Rights and More Prevention”
campaign on Tuesday at the
launch of the drive.
“It is a serious situation and
if we are not concerned about
it, there will be a member of
every family infected by the
virus,” said Lopez of the
three-year campaign expected to
extend to 178 Guatemalan
communities.
The project, to which nearly a
million dollars has been
allocated, is aimed at educating
the population regarding
prevention methods as well as
raising public awareness on the
rights of those living with the
virus.
Although there are
constitutional regulations
preventing HIV-infected
Guatemalans from cruel or
inhumane treatment, there is
still a need to bring those
rights into effect so they
become a reality, Lopez
remarked.
The project will be financed by
International Plan, an
organization that supports for
children and rural populations
since 1978 and will also be
supported by Gente Nueva and
Gente Positiva, Guatemalan
non-governmental organizations.
