No Pact of Silence over Panama
Genocide
The US invasion of Panama on Dec
20, 1989, is a historic event
over which there will not be any
shroud of silence, Panama
Ambassador to Spain Humberto
Lopez Tirone said Tuesday.
In remarks to Prensa Latina from
Casa de America at the screening
of the documentary “The Panama
Deception”, by Barbara Trent,
the diplomat said this work has
the value of refreshing the
memory of Panamanians, of the US
people, and the world.
Lopez Tirone, who is also
national secretary of the
Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD),
insisted that the invasion
ordered by George Bush senior is
a latent genocide, which the
victims have not overcome.
He recalled that more than 200
highly destructive bombs were
launched over Panama in the
first 24 hours of the invasion,
killing more than 3,000 people
of a population of 2.5 million
inhabitants.
Lopez Tirone was emphatic that
the invasion was not to capture
one man, as Bush senior
proclaimed, but to strike a blow
at the jugular of the country´s
national independence process
begun by Omar Torrijos.
