Hondurans Want Mining Independence
Honduran peoples' organizations are carrying out a great offensive to free the territory from the transnational companies controlling and exploiting mining in the country.

In their demand to expel the foreign corporations extracting gold, silver, lead and zinc, thousands of people blocked the country´s main roads on Tuesday, July 25.

Although President Manuel Zelaya´s administration had refused to negotiate with groups exerting this kind of pressure, the first protests produced an agreement by the government to meet with leaders of the Civic Alliance for Democracy, gathering a dozen peoples´ organizations, to define the future of the industry.

Releasing this country from the presence of the mining companies would be like a second independence, after that from the Spanish Crown in 1821, said Fausto Milla, one of the 50 Catholic priests supporting the fight to expel the foreign enterprises.
