Guatemalan Pensioners Protest
Guatemalan seniors continued
protesting at the
Constitutionality Court on
Friday, after the suspension of
the Pension law for those
elderly with no families.
The protesters, who have been
hunger striking since June,
expressed their decision to
continue demonstrating until
achieving minimum public
assistance for more than 60,000
people with no social aid.
Héctor Montenegro, who is the
leader of the Elderly
Association, said there will be
assemblies all over the country
from next Monday on, aimed at
concluding new protest measures
against suspension of the
pension law.
The Court declared
unconstitutional the law with
the pretext that it does not
specify a funding source for its
implementation.
However, two of the five judges
from that court expressed in an
annex their rejection of that
argument, since the legislation
says that 1.89 percent of the
Added Value Tax is destined to
the seniors´ pensions.
