Panama Jails Overcrowded
Nearly 12,000 people are jailed
in Panama in prisons with
capacity for 7,300, a situation
that generates violence and
desperation.
This problem is also criticized
for administrative
irregularities in national
penitentiaries.
La Joya, La Joyita and La
Chorrera are the detention
centers with the highest
overcrowding rates.
For Sharon Diaz, of the Program
of the People´s Defender for
Persons Deprived of Freedom,
overcrowding is a human rights
violation.
She added that Panama is among
the Latin American nations with
alarming jail overcrowding.
