Guatemalan Child Kill Count:
400+
At least 412 children and teens
were murdered last year in
Guatemala, according to data
provided by the Archbishopric
Human Rights Office (ODHAG).
The ODHAG report, “Situation of
Childhood in Guatemala 2005,”
presents a bleak outlook 10
years after peace was signed in
this country.
There has been little progress
since then, as we have more
deaths of children than before
due to violence. In addition,
preventable diseases continue
claiming lives, and there are
problems in education, said Nery
Rodenas, from ODHAG.
The document, which was released
in a ceremony at the Palace of
Culture, says that children and
teenagers in the mostly
indigenous rural areas are
affected by malnutrition, high
mortality rates and lack of
services.
There has been some progress in
primary education countrywide,
but there remains much to be
done in other levels, according
to the text.
It also criticizes the Congress
of the Republic for continuously
postponing approval of
legislations to benefit the
country´s child population.
