Central America Women Talk
Agriculture, FTA
Indigenous and farm women are
meeting Wednesday in Guatemala
City to analyze problems of
land, natural resources and the
consequences for communities of
the Central America-US Free
Trade Agreement (CAFTA).
Nearly 200 representatives from
different linguistic regions in
the nation as well as of
Honduras, Nicaragua, El
Salvador, Costa Rica plus Panama
attend the 6th Women´s
Conference, opened Tuesday in
this capital.
Among main issues on the agenda
appear the situations native
communities are facing due to
the plundering of natural
resources, violent evictions and
dispossession of their lands.
According to the National
Indigenous and Campesino
Coordinator leader Dolores
Sales, the land problem causes
many indigenous women to die
from famine and malnutrition, a
situation that will worsen after
CAFTA comes into force in
Guatemala on July 1.
The two-day conference will also
deal with the participation of
that female sector in the
political life of their
communities and country.
Although the Constitution,
signed 10 years ago, establishes
sex equality and rejects
discrimination, no advances have
been made because Central
American governments are not
willing to implement those laws.
