Nicaragua Hospitals Back on
Strike
The Nicaraguan Health Workers
Federation (FETSALUD) announced
Wednesday a gradual strike to
demand that the Executive fulfil
agreements that had wrapped up
the previous six-month protest.
According to FETSALUD leader
Gustavo Porras, the protest will
last three days but could extend
if the government insists on
ignoring the union´s complaints.
He noted that state hospitals
will see emergency cases during
the strike.
The 20,000-member union accuses
the Health Ministry (MINSA) of
not complying with the 30
percent wage raise and other
benefits it promised in April.
Porras asserted that MINSA is
trying to remove the collective
agreement and the over 2.8
million dollars they agreed for
a housing plan for the sector.
