US Ambassador to Venezuela
Refutes Invasion Allegation
United States ambassador to
Venezuela William Brownfield on
Tuesday reiterated that his
country has no intention to
invade Venezuela.
The United States "has never
invaded Venezuela, is not
invading the country at present,
and will never invade," he said
at a public ceremony marking the
U.S. Independence Day.
"There is no chance of a U.S.
invasion," he added.
Brownfield was responding to a
media question about Venezuela's
arms purchases.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez
has repeatedly accused
Washington of planning to unseat
his government and invade
Venezuela, citing this as the
reason for Venezuela's purchase
of 100,000 guns and 33
helicopters from Russia.
Brownfield added that the text
of the U.S.-Venezuela anti-drug
agreement, which commits the
U.S. Drug Enforcement
Administration and the
Venezuelan government to
fighting drug smuggling, is now
ready for signing.
"This text has been ready since
December last year, and let's
hope that we can sign it and
begin an new era of working
together on the issue of illegal
drugs," he said.
