Candidate Buried
Thousands of Nicaraguans,
President Enrique Bolaños
included, Wednesday attended the
burial of Herty Lewites,
Presidential Candidate of
Alliance Renewed Sandinista
Movement.
The corpse of the politician who
died on Sunday due to a sudden
heart attack, was buried in his
home region of Jinotepe, 31
miles south Mnagua, on Wednesday
afternoon.
The funeral was attended by
former President Violeta Barrios
de Chamorro (1990-1997) and
other outstanding local
politicians.
The son-in-law of the former
dignitary, economist Edmundo
Jarquin, will be the new
presidential candidate in
substitution for Lewites and
representing a party mainly
formed by former members of the
Sandinista National Liberation
Front.
Jarquin, a technocrat working
abroad as official of the Inter
American Development Bank during
the last years, was Lewites´
fellow in the coming elections
on November 5.
The new candidate for the
vice-presidency will be the
singer and song-writer Carlos
Mejias Godoy, author of
well-known themes of the
Nicaraguan folklore and the
anthem of the Sandinista
National Liberation Front.
