Sounds familiar? subscribers to
the Instituto Costarricense de
Electricidad (ICE) GSM cellular
network are constantly finding
it more and more frustrating in
completing calls, calls with no
one there and simply "call
failed".
To that end, ICE has announced
it will be installing 58 new
radio bases and repeaters to
improve service to the GSM
network.
The installation will be done by
Ericcson de Costa Rica at no
additional cost to ICE and will
improve service to 24 localities
and along six national highways.
ICE has two GSM networks,
referred as the "old" with
400.000 lines and the "new" with
600.000 lines. The new is the
problem system, a network that
was installed last year and in a
rush to bring the network on
line by December 2005, a number
of contracts for lands to
install the radiobases were not
completed and the network has
experienced failures due to
that.
The new network was installed by
Ericcson after political and
legal problems stalled the
project following the discovery
of payoffs by rival Alcatel,
when a number of ICE officials
and including former president
Rodríguez (1998-2002) were
implicated in the scandal.
Orlanod Cascante, director of
mobile services at ICE, says
that the institution continues
to make improvement to its
cellular networks to keep up
with the demand.

improvement in reception are:

• Búfalo de Limón
• Pacuarito de Siquirres, Limón
• Mercedes - Pocora de Guácimo,
