Guatemala National Mobe Thursday
Highway blockades and peaceful demonstrations in various parts of Guatemala begin Thursday the national mobilization of unions and farmer and social organizations to demand the government to attend to people´s needs.

Union leader (UASP-Accion Sindical y Popular) Nery Barrios insisted to Prensa Latina that the days of protest will be peaceful, although blockades will be strategic, and called official allegations of an armed uprising "twisted".

The mobilization has been called to urge approval of a rural development law, solution to agrarian conflicts, ending of violent dislocations and forgiveness of the debt of some 250 farm families.

In addition, the social and popular movement wants reinstatement of Joviel Acevedo, Labor and Education Union leader and coordinator of the National Teachers Assembly.

Government Minister Carlos Vielman has announced the administration "will not tolerate highway blockades" and has ordered police to the nation´s principal roadways.
