Two
Tonnes of Marijuana Seized
The Policía de Control de Drogas
(PCD) - drug enforcement police
- said on Wednesday that they
had seized more than two tonnes
of marijuana in the province of
Puntarenas.
The 2,181 kg compressed
marijuana which was separately
packed in 49 bags was hidden
near a beach in a nature reserve
in Puntarenas and found by an
employee of the reserve the
previous night, the police said.
The identity of the person or
persons trafficking in drugs was
unknown and no arrests had been
made. Police said that the drugs
might come from Colombia.
Costa Rica seized over 10 tonnes
of cocaine in 2005, the biggest
total annual seizure in the
country's history, beating the
1997 record of more than seven
tonnes.
The country's drug enforcement
agencies also seized 49.5 kg of
heroin and 3.3 tonnes of
marijuana, as well as 6,850 drug
dealers during the year.
Due to its geographical
features, Central America has
served as an important route for
international drug dealers to
smuggle drugs into the United
States.
Costa Rican police estimated
that about 570 tonnes of cocaine
are being smuggled into the
United States via Central
America each year.
