Growers
Little Rewarded
Less than 10 percent of the
income generated by coffee,
melons, and other products
actually finds its way to the
actual growers of those goods in
Costa Rica, according to a study
developed by institutions in
three nations.
Experts from the
International Center for
Economic Policy of the state
National University (UNA), the
University of Tilburg in the
Netherlands, and the IVO
Institute in Sweden partook in a
study of the whole chain of
processes a product goes
through, from actual production
to the consumer.
One of the
scientists said that coffee
growers actually get some 8
percent of the overall income
from the product, a figure that
drops to 6 percent for melons,
and is even lower for other
products.
