School Fight Results In Five Injured
A violent free-for-all broke out yesterday mid-morning outside the Liceo de Costa Rica (LCR) after a group of students from the Liceo del Sur began throwing rocks at the school, which motivated the reaction from a group of LCR students that began the melee.

Broken windows, five students injured and classes suspended was the result of the commotion between students of the two rival schools. Students of the Liceo del Sur, with rocks and sticks in hand, never imagined the reaction by the LCR students., witnesses said.

LCR students fended off the attack and began to chase the Sur students, continuing the free-for-all onto the nearby streets.

"They came to throw rocks at our institution, we, in no way provoked the attack", said Carlos Barrantes, a music professor at the LCR.

At 11:50am, police were called on the scene, confirming the reports of the disturbance and immediately coordinated an an effort by various police units to control the situation. However, with each minute passing, the situation got hotter, as students began to run in every direction. It took police some time to finally control the situation and by 1:30pm, it was all over.

To avoid the situation from flaring up again, police detained, only for a short time, a number of students believed to be behind the whole thing.

Police say that more than 200 students were involved in the disturbance.

According to Liceo de Costa Rica students, the rivalry between the schools goes back a long way and many LCR students have been attacked by Sur students.

Unofficially, college officials say that yesterday's disturbance was a continuation of an attack of a student last Thursday, who was robbed of his cellular phone and wallet.
