Quality of Tico Coffee Excels
Seventy percent of all Costa
Rican coffee qualifies for the
gourmet or boutique market.
The Coffee
Institute of Costa Rica (ICAFE) estimates that in
two crops 70 percent of the
production will be sold at
prices of between $5 to $40
above the markets on the New York
Stock Exchange.
Even though the last crisis in
coffee prices, which started in
1999, delivered a heavy blow
against Costa Rica, the strategy
of focusing on high-quality
coffee reversed the
effects.
According to an
analyst, real income for Costa
Rican coffee growers dropped by
40 percent, but now the trend
seems to be changing for the better.
