Costa Rica Exports Talent, Too
Among 104 countries, Costa Rica
is the 20th largest exporter of
"brains", according to the most
recent global report on
information technology from the
World Economic Forum.
The index is based on a survey
in each country.
The two major destinations of
Tico talent are the United
States, particularly in the
health sector, and Europe,
mainly engineers.
For the professionals who work
abroad, they enjoy higher income
and better chances of training,
among other advantages.
For researchers, working abroad
means the opportunity to do work
which is not available here. If
they return to Costa Rica, they
would become assets for the
country, but if they don't, the
nation loses its investment in
their education, analysts claim.
