Ecuadorians March for
Legislative Elections
Nearly 1,000 people from
grassroots organizations urged
for the resignation of the
entire National Congress and
warned the government of the
need to honor the promises made
after Alfredo Palacio became
President of Ecuador.
These groups evicted
ex-President Lucio Gutierrez
last April and marched on
Parliament amidst blaring horns
in downtown Quito chanting
"Everyone must go."
They also demanded new
Parliamentary elections and
called for the president to
listen to requests from the
popular assemblies concerning
the Free Trade Agreement for the
Americas (ALCA) and the US
troops stationed in Manta
military base.
Fearing incidents similar to
last April when Congress was
invaded and vandalized, the
legislators decided to evacuate
the building to keep out
demonstrators.
