Calderón Goes Home
Wednesday morning the Tribunal Penal de Hacienda rendered it's decision on the appeal by former president Rafael Angel Calderón and decided to let the former president trade his jail cell in La Reforma prison for the comfort of his home.

The week earlier, a court ordered that the former president remain in preventive custody for a an additional three months, until Jun 22. Calderón had been in La Reforma since Octber 22, 2004.

Didier Mora ordered that the former president post a ˘200 million colones (us$425.000) bond and that his movements be restricted to his home in Pinares de Curridabat, east of San José.

The former president posted the bond, using his part of his home equity as seciruty, and was home by Wednesday night.

Calderón is being investigated for his role in the Fischel-Caja scandal, were he received part of the us$9 million dollars that was commissions paid on the approval of the loan from the government of Finland to the Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social for us$39 million dollars.

His cellmate, former president Miguel Angel Rodríguez (accused in the ICE-Alcatel scandal) got to go home a week earlier, when a court ordered him to serve our his preventive detention under house arrest instead of a cell in the La Reforma. Rodríquez was also ordered to post a ˘250 million colones bond. which he did promplty.
