Chelles, A Landmark Gone
A fire in downtown San José yesterday morning levelled the building that housed the Soda Chelles located on Avenida Central on the eastern boundary of the boulevard.

Quick action by firefighters controlled the fire that spread rapidly that also damaged the stores and restaurant, El Mariscar, on the west and south side of the property. The whole area was cordoned off as fire spread quickly shortly after noon.

More than 60 firefighters battled the blaze that lasted about 1/2 hour.

Police cordoned off the area to the east from old Cine Capri, to the west at the Hotel Presidente, as well completely stopping north and south traffic on Calle 7.

No one was hurt in the blaze. The owners of the restaurant Mariscar, adjoining Chelles, who lived on the second floor of the restaurant where able to escape unharmed.

All is lost.  The cause of the blaze has yet to be determined.

Chelles had been a landmark being in the same spot for some 100 years.
