Fiscalía Asks For Six More Months for Calderón
Bad news came for former president Rafael
Angel Calderón, who has been counting down the days for his release from
preventive detention in La Reforma prison, which expires next Tuesday,
March 22, as the Fiscalía (prosecutor's office) has made a court appeal
to extend the former president's detention for another six months.
If approved, Calderón could be in La Reforma until September 22, unless
an appeal reduces it.
The Juzgado Penal del II Circuito Judicial has to render a decision
before the March 22 deadline if it wants to keep the former president
under guard.
Calderón is tied to the Fischel-Caja scandal and the payment of
commissions on the us$39 million loan from the government of Finland to
the Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social and was ordered to preventive
detention on October 22 last.
His cell mate, former president Miguel Angel Rodríguez got his release
from La Reforma this week when a judge agreed with the former
president's arguments and moved him to "house arrest". Rodríguez is now
at home in his luxurious house in San Rafael de Escazú under constant
police surveillance and limited access to visitors.
