Hike in Bus Fares Approved
Daily for Costa Ricans and foreigners alike
is getting more and more expensive every day. Each week there is some
announcement of planned increases in prices of public services - taxi
fares, gasoline, water, electricity and the latest, bus fares.
Earlier this week Autoridad Reguladora de los Servicios Públicos (ARESEP)
approved a hike in the price of gasoline to the highest level ever.
Yesterday it approved, based on an automatic formula, an average 6% in
bus fares.
Bus fares will rise between 23 and 240 colones (us 5 to 51 cents) on all
bus routes in the country.
Of the 744 different bus routes, 133 of them will not see a price hike
due to the fact the companies who operate those routes owe money to the
Caja Costarricense del Seguro Social (CCSS) and cannot apply a rate
increase until they pay up their outstanding balances.
The hikes in bus fares and gasoline prices all come just before the big
holiday week of Semana Santa when most Costa Ricans head for the beaches
and other recreational points.
