Nicaraguan President in Costa Rica to Offer
Condolences Over the Monteverde Massacre
Nicaraguan president, Enrique Bolaños,
yesterday visited Costa Rica and met with president Abel Pacheco to
discuss mutual concerns affecting both countries.
Immigration and customs concerns at the northern border of Peñas Blancas,
the creation of a Central American passport and Rio San Juan, were some
of the issues discussed by both sides.
Bolaños also took a moment to offer his "pésame" - condolences for those
who died in Monteverde last week at the hands of Nicaraguan
"anti-socials".
Three brothers of Nicaraguan origin were the main perpetratos of a
frustrated bank assault in the small town of Santa Elena de Montevered
where six bank customers and staff and one police officer died. Two of
the brothers were killed by bank security guards and a third is in
police custody, giving himself up after holding hostages for more than
28 hours.
Bolaños told Pacheco that in less than 15 days his country will ratify
the Tratado Libre de Comercio - TLC (free trade agreement) with the
United States and it will be good for his country, even though there has
been much opposition by other Central American countries like Guatemala
and Costa Rica.
The two men also discussed the possibility in the near future of all the
Central American presidents traveling to Washington, D.C. to convince
the U.S. Congress to approve the trade agreement.
