Costa Rica to Appeal FIFA
Suspension
Costa Rica's soccer association
will appeal to FIFA for a
three-game ban handed down to
defender Douglas Sequeira, it
said on its website on Thursday.
In a statement posted on its Web
site, Costa Rica's soccer
federation said the punishment
was too harsh and that it would
file an appeal with FIFA in the
coming days.
Sequeira received a red card in
the 92nd minute in the a 3-0
World Cup qualifying loss to the
United States on June 4 in Salt
Lake City, Utah, after a wild
tackle in which he kneed U.S.
defender Steve Cherundolo in the
stomach.
The foul was exacerbated when
Guatemalan referee Carlos Batres
noted that Sequeira refused to
leave the field in the first
minuteafter being ejected.
FIFA fined Sequeira us$5,500
dollars and suspended him for
three matches in the CONCACAF
region, which includes North and
Central America and the
Caribbean.
