Halo! Damn, the Line is Down
Again.
How many times have you picked
up the telephone and there is no
dial tone? We all blame the
Instituto Costarricense de
Electricidad (ICE) - the
telephone company - for lousy
service.
But, the truth is that, in most
cases it's not the fault of the
telephone company. In many small
communities as well as in San
José, thieves steal the cables
for the copper content.
In the last year, ICE has
attended to 149 complaints of
missing cables, costing the
telephone company some ˘203
million colones (us$420.000). In
addition, ICE has to reinforce
security in some areas, as well
as its storage warehouses.
The problem the telephone
company faces is not only the
cost to replace and repair the
damaged post and missing cables,
but the cost to the community
where service can be interrupted
for one or two days.
This month alone ICE has made 16
reports to the Organismo de
Investigacion Judicial (OIJ).
