Argentine Supreme Court
invalidates 2 amnesty laws
The Supreme Court of Justice of
Argentina on Tuesday invalidated
two amnesty laws that shield
military officers from human
rights prosecutions for alleged
crimes committed during the
country's so-called "Dirty War."
The annulment of the two amnesty
laws will allow the reactivation
of proceedings against some
1,500 military and police agents
accused of kidnapping, torturing
and assassinating presumed
political opponents.
The two amnesty laws were
decreed in 1986 and 1987, under
Radical Party president Raul
Alfonsin. One law granted
enlisted men and officers
protection from prosecution if
they had merely followed orders
in committing abuses. The other
law granted an outright amnesty
to the commanders who gave the
orders.
A government report says 11,000
people either died or
disappeared during a systematic
crackdown during the 1976-1983
military rule.
