5 beheaded, 14 taken hostage in
Brazil prison riot
Five inmates were beheaded and
14 prison guards held as
hostages by the rebellious
inmates Tuesday in a prison in
southeastern Brazil, prison
officials said.
The rebellious inmates at the
Presidente Venceslau
Penitentiary of Sao Paulo
demanded the presence of a judge
and the departure ofthe military
police from the prison,
according to Danilo Bomfim,
spokesman for the Prison Guards
Union.
During the riot, a gang called
"First Capital Commando" forced
prison guards to surrender and
invaded the zone where the
victims were kept.
The five killed inmates would
have been expelled members of
the criminal ring, who were kept
by the authorities in a "safe"
place.
"They were stabbed and beaten to
death and then decapitated.
Their heads have been placed
next to each other on top of one
of the prison walls for all to
see," said Bomfim.
The riot started on Tuesday
morning and continued until the
afternoon.
