Earthquake in Chile not a
"big one"
The earthquake which jolted the
northern part of Chile on Monday
was not a "big one," a Chilean
expert said on Tuesday.
The quake was "an Andean
phenomenon" that occurred from
the very deep interior of the
continent, said Seismology
Department Director Carlos
Aranda of University of Chile.
"These are very rare seisms and
not the typical earthquakes
we're used to."
He said Monday's quake was the
one with the highest magnitude
in recent years. But the depth
of the epicenter was 110 km and
was far from cities, which
diminished the possibility of
damage.
Chile is an earthquake-prone
country. The biggest one
occurred in 1960 in Valdivia,
registered 9.5 degrees on the
Richter scale.
Among the quakes, the most
destructive are coastal ones.
The last such quake occurred in
1985 at Valparaiso.
