President Pacheco Leaves
Hospital
Following three days in
hospital, President Abel Pacheco
left the Calderón Guardia
yesterday morning for rest at
home and be back to work on
Monday.
At 10:30, the presidential
motorcade made it's way from the
underground garage of the
hospital, headed for Rohrmoser,
where the President lives.
Doctors say the President's
condition is under control and
will be wearing a monitor to
check on his blood pressure
constantly, rather than checking
it on a regular basis.
Doctors are ordering the
President to take a couple of
days rest before going back to
work. Doctors are also ordering
the President to watch his diet,
more physical exercise and lower
his stress level.
Pacheco now 71 years old is a
diabetic and suffers from high
blood pressure, though doctors
say he is not overweight.
At the same time Pacheco was in
hospital, his mother, Marta de
la Espriella, was admitted for
problems in breathing, to which
she received medical attention
and released the say day.
Doctors say the President's
condition is due to stress.
President Pacheco has been under
extreme pressure in the last
weeks, being accused of
accepting gifts, using free
airline passes for personal use
and allegations of
irregularities between the
appointment of the Honourary
Consul in Sevilla, Spain, and a
land development project in
Guanacaste who is headed by his
former Minister of Tourims,
Rubén Pacheco.
The chief of protocol at Casa
Presidencial, Jorge Arce, who
accompanied President Pacheco on
both trips to Spain, quit his
post last week and last
Thursday, Pacheco took to
national radio and television to
explain the situation to all
Costa Ricans.
He told them that he has done
nothing wrong and will pay for
the free airline tickets that
are provided to the government
by TACA airlines. He said the
use of the tickets was a
customary practice by all the
presidents of Central America
and it was not his intention to
defraud the state.
In his words, Pacheco told the
viewing and listening audience,
"You know me and know what I am
all about."
