1,200 Street Children
Some 1,200 children depend on
charity to eat, sleep on
cardboard, and survive, exposed
to cold and drugs, in the
streets of San José, admitted
Mario Viquez, from the
Ombudsman's Office for Children.
Víquez pointed out that the
situation of these children is
continually worsening, since it
has gone from selling chewing
gum, flowers, and other items to
mixing with beggars,
prostitutes, and drug peddlers.
Many of the little ones have
become drug addicts, and resort
to stealing, among other things,
to obtain money.
Viquez pointed out that, in
spite of limitations, efforts
are under way to develop centers
where these children can be
properly taken care of and
rehabilitated.
