Street Vendors Back to the
Streets
Some 200 Street Vendors removed
from the downtown streets of San
José last January will be back
on the street today, saying they
were lied to and cheated.
The Municipality of San José won
the last court ruling to remove
the street vendors last December
but waited until January to
physically remove them.
The vendors were promised a
place in the old registro
building that was going to be
transferred ownership from the
Registro Civil of thel
Ministerio de Seguridad Pública
(MSP) to the Municipalidad de
San José.
But, now seven months later, the
vendors say nothing has
happened.
Geovanny Ramírez, one of the
leaders of the group, says that
President Pacheco has yet to
sign the decree that would see
the building transferred to the
Municipality and that the
"ferias" - informal markets -
are not working out. Many
vendors have given up completely
on the ferias held outside of
the city centre.
Ramirez said that they have no
other option but to return to
the streets of downtown San José
or go hungry.
