No To Task Force
Costa Rica will not partake in a
task force that the Central
American nations plan to
establish to fight terrorism and
the juvenile gangs known as "maras".
This position was stated by the
Minister of Foreign Affairs
Roberto Tovar and confirmed by
President Abel Pacheco.
Minister Tovar said that Costa
Rica does not deem convenient to
partake in the initiative the
way it is planned.
"Because of the civil tradition
of Costa Rica and of the
Constitution, Costa Rica cannot
be part of an organization of
this structure," he pointed out.
The task force would be a joint
unit of the police corps and the
military from the region.
According to President Pacheco,
Costa Rica would neither allow
such a force to operate in its
territory.
