25% of Tico Labour Force With
"Informal" Work
According to the results of the
Estudio Indicadores de la
Situación Ocupacional en
Centroamérica done by the
Organización Internacional del
Trabajo (OIT), 25% of the Costa
Rican labour force works
informally, that is, these
workers work at jobs and for
employers who do not respect the
"Código de Trabajo" - Labour
Code - and thus don't benefit
from job equality and job
security like the rest of the
work force.
Gerardina González, a director
of the Sub- regional office of
the OIT, assures that that is
one of the highest concerns of
her organization; improving the
quality of jobs and reducing
informal labour.
The numbers equal to 7.3 million
informal workers across Central
America, most working in
agricultural (3.8 million) jobs.
González added that another
objective of the OIT is to
improve the participation of
women in the labour force,
which, along with youths,
presents the highest level of
unemployment in the region.
The director added that the
objective can be met only by
bettering formal education for
this group.
