Majority of Cell Phone Users Complain of Coverage; Survey Shows
Cellular telephone service is lousy, this according to 71.8% of customers surveyed by the Autoridad Reguladora de Servicios Públicos (Aresep).

The government agency that regulates public prices and services said that the majority of cellular telephone customers complain above coverage, especially within office buildings. Complaints range from calls being dropped to not getting a signal in many areas.

Some customers cannot use their cellular telephone inside their homes, having to go outside to make or receive calls.

The survey took in the comments of 2.400 cellular customers between September 1 and October 7 of this year, asked primarily on the technical aspects of the service.

57% of the customers were using the older TDMA service, while 43% were using GSM. The new GSM network, that is supposed to solve many of the complaints, was not yet operational during the survey period.

In addition to lousy signals, customers also complained that the Insituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) was deficient in providing information about the service and coverage and many had difficulty accessing the 193 - cellular telephone customer - service.

The Aresep is recommending that ICE provide better coverage and more information to its customers, in addition to adding more operators to the 193.
