Chilean Electoral Countdown
Chile's Armed Forces have taken control of all public squares in the country to keep the peace and public security before Chileans go to the polls.

More than 20,000 troops from the Army, Navy, Air Force and Police were mobilized as of midnight Thursday to enforce measures established under the electoral law.

They will see that election advertisement is concluded, with all posters dropped near poll stations and all party headquarters closed down.

On Election Day (Sunday), a dry law will be in force countrywide, and theaters and stadiums will stay closed until four hours after voting is complete.

At least 8.22 million people have registered to vote. They will have the responsibility to elect a new president for the next four years, as well as renew 20 out of 38 seats of the Senate and all 120 members of the House.

Meanwhile, Undersecretary of Interior Jorge Correa announced on Friday that he will brief journalists on Sunday on the election process.

Preliminary results, with about 10 percent of votes, will be released at 18:30 that day, he said.

A second report is expected to be released before 21:00 "if everything goes on well", and others might follow before the final count is presented Monday morning, he added.
