Chile to buy 18 modernized
F-16 fighter planes from Holland
Chile will add 18 modernized
F-16 fighter planes to its air
force with the first delivery
expected from the Netherlands in
2006, local media said on
Sunday.
The Netherlands has requested US
authorization to make the sale
worth 7.5 million US dollars, of
which 4.4 million dollars have
been paid.
The aircraft will join a dozen
state-of-the-art F-16 warplanes
that the Chilean Air Force was
given permission to buy in
January 2002.
The US-based Lockheed Martin
company will offer the spare
parts and technology to give the
aircraft a mid-life upgrade,
which will allow the warplanes,
built in the 1980s, to have
advanced weaponry and 20 more
years in service.
