 Government
Declares A Health Emergency in Costa Rica
The Costa Rican government issued a "health
emergency" declaration yesterday following
the confirmation of two cases of swine flu.
The declaration allows the Arias
administration to reinforce prevention,
vigilance and medical attention in the
country.
Two Cases of
Swine Flu Confirmed in Costa Rica
A 21 year old woman and a 29 year old man
are the first two confirmed cases of swine
flu in Costa Rica, some 35 others are under
watch, suspected of being infected,
according to the ministerio de Salud (Health
ministry).

Rush To Buy "Tapabocas" (Masks)
Fearing contact with the swine flu that has
two confirmed cases in Costa Rica and killed
some 140 in Mexico, had Costa Ricans running
yesterday to buy protective masks, looking
for vaccines and vitamins. Many of the
pharmacies in San Jose sold out of the masks
by the closing time.

Mexicana de Aviacion and TACA both reported
massive cancellation or postponement of
flights from Costa Rica to Mexico following
the outbreak of swine flu that has now two
confirmed cases in Cost Rica, dozens in the
US and Canada and has killed almost 150 in
Mexico.
Recope Admits Selling
Gasoline With Ethanol Mix, But Little Can Be
Done About It
The sale of gasoline with ethanol by the
Refinadora Costarricense de Petróleo (Recope)
at the end of February and beginning of
March is illegal and the state refinery
yesterday admitted to selling 30 million
litres of the ethanol added gasoline at
gasoline stations around the country and
without telling customers, feeling it was
not necessary.

Rescues Mariners After Boat Sank Off Costa
Rica
The Coast Guard rescued a survivors of a
SF-based boat that sank off Costa
Rica.Stephen Szukics, 55, of Fort Worth,
Texas, and James Winningham, 45, of Murphys,
Calif. told the Coast Guard they were en
route to Texas via the Panama Canal aboard
the Black Pearl, a 55-foot boat home ported
in Loch Lomond Marina, San Francisco, when
the vessel sank.

Nicaragua Labour for Minimum Wage Deal
Managua - Nicaraguan workers proposed a minimum wage
initiative in the private sector to prevent
arriving at the May 1 celebration without an
agreement, a union leader announced. Roberto
Gonzalez of the Sandinista Workers Central
said that they present it as an alternative
for a tripartite agreement that establishes
eight percent for small and medium companies
and 15 percent for the other sectors of the
economy.
Nicaragua Protecting Children
Managua - The
Amor (Love) Program for children and
adolescents'' rights is making progress
today in Nicaragua, according Family
Minister Maria Isabel Munoz. The plan,
launched several months ago by the
Communication and Citizenry Council
Coordinator Rosario Murillo, aims at
registering around 20,000 children not
listed in the Civil Register, to restore
their rights to a name and nationality.

Panama - New York Stock Exchange-listed shares of Panama-based airline Copa Holding SA (CPA) fell 11% Monday on nervousness about the spreading of swine flu from Mexico.

Brazil, Peru Presidents Sign Accords
Brasilia - Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Peru's Alan Garcia are to meet Tuesday in Rio Branco, capital of the Brazilian state of Acre, to sign several accords.
