Cuba Keeps an Eye on Swine Flu
Havana - Cuba is
closely monitoring the new virus of swine
flu that has caused over 100 deaths in
Mexico, dozens of cases in the US and is
being reported in several European
countries. Statements by Cuban Public Health
Vice Minister Luis Estruch in Granma daily
this Tuesday say the Caribbean island has no
confirmed or suspicious case reports.
Cuban health officials monitor national
clinical and epidemiology and update the
population through the National Health Care
System and plan actions jointly with the
national guard.
The World Health Organization says the
Influenza A H1N1 strain of the virus has
been found for the first time ever both in
animals and humans so it is hard to forecast
the disease's reach.
Cuba's health system has the potential to
diagnose and treat the disease, said Estruch,
a specialist in Epidemiology.
There is qualified staff to assist and
monitor patients and meet the people's needs
around the clock in case of an emergency.
In line with the international situation,
Estruch called to adopt strict personal and
collective hygiene at schools, services and
other public places.
Cuba is implementing control measures in
ports and airports and on planes, ships and
in-coming travelers to prevent entrance of
the virus.
