Presidents Sign Accords
Brasilia - Brazil's President Luiz Inacio
Lula da Silva and Peru's Alan Garcia are to
meet Tuesday in Rio Branco, capital of the
Brazilian state of Acre, to sign several
accords. A press release from the Brazilian
Foreign Affairs Ministry states that the two
statesmen will analyze bilateral subjects
like border issues and trade integration,
energy development, regional and
international affairs.
Lula and Garcia will also attend the closing
ceremony of the Brazil-Peru Managerial
Forum, with attendance of nearly 200
businesspeople from the two nations, and ink
several agreements on micro and small
companies, public health, technical and
professional teaching, agricultural
research, and electrical inter-connection.
Marcelo Baumbach, spokesman of the Brazilian
presidency, said at a news conference that
the meeting will take place in a time of
increasing rapprochement between the two
countries, based on economic and trade
projects and reinforcing bilateral
integration.
Baumbach also stressed they are meeting for
the first time in the capital of a bordering
state, so the issues related to cooperation
and development of the neighboring zone will
be among the central topics of talks and
accords the two heads of State will sign.
During the meeting, the statesmen will
publish the Rio Branco Commitment, which
includes new measures to encourage economic
and trade exchange, border development, and
energy integration, he noted.
Lula and Garcia will also determine steps to
follow, aimed at eliminating obstacles in
the commercial and economic flow between
states and regions of the bordering strip.
Bilateral trade increased significantly in
the last few years, from $724 million in
2003 to nearly $3.3 billion in 2008, while
Brazilian investments in Peru have reached
$2 billion. |
