Drivers Licenses With More Information

Costa Rican drivers licenses now have more information than the previous licenses.

As of May 10, all drivers licenses issued also include the blood type of the driver and their wish to donate any organs.

The ministerio de Transportes is asking all doctors to fill in the blood type in the required form to obtain a drivers license, failing which the application will be rejected.

Rosaura Montero, vice-ministra de Transportes, said that some doctors attach the medical report but do not check the box for the blood type.

A medical exam is a pre-requisite to obtain or renew a drivers license in Costa Rica.

The exam consists of a visit to a medical doctor who fill out a special form which is submitted with the license application.

The practice of medical doctors setting up offices near the driver licensing offices in La Uruca and other parts of the country is common. These doctors offices are staffed by medical doctors with the sole purpose of providing a medical check and filling out the drivers license form.

Vice-ministra Montero added that psychological testing is not yet a pre-requisite, hinting that it might soon be.
